James Stephens, the Fenian leader, a veteran of the Young Irelanders 1848 Rising and the founder of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, declared that there was a difference between shallow blind patriotism and genuine ideological republicanism, adding that if the situation were reversed he would fight for cause of liberty rather than the country of his birth:
“Were England a republic battling for human freedom on one hand, and Ireland leagued with despots on the other, I should, unhesitatingly,
take up arms against my native land”

This book is about the English, Scottish and Welsh who fought and/or died for the Irish Republic, but who had no family connections to Ireland and no reason to take up arms to fight for the Irish Republic except that it was obvious to anyone, of any nationality, that the cause of Irish Freedom was a just one that deserved the support of the free men and free women of the entire world.
