Background to Kilmainham Tales Teo.
Kilmainham Tales Teo. is a publishing venture dedicated to issuing ‘pocket money’ books on all aspects of the history of Kilmainham Gaol and associated places, people and events. It is hoped, through our authors and these new publications, to expand and record our knowledge of this historic national momument.
The brainchild of Mícheál Ó Doibhilín, Kilmainham Tales publications are firmly rooted in the traditions and ethos of the Kilmainham Gaol Restoration Society which also saw the need for small, easily read publications on this historic prison - its prisoners, staff and associated events. That Society published several such booklets, including “Ghosts of Kilmainham”, “The Fenians” etc.
Kilmainham Gaol's history:
Today, as more and more research is being carried out into the Gaol’s complex and fascinating history, there is a need not just to publish the results but to encourage others to become involved in this research too - and to do this in a popular, non-academic, accessible manner. To date, only a small part of the overall history of Kilmainham Gaol is known, and it is hoped, through our authors and these new publications, to expand and record our knowledge base.
While 'popular' and 'non-academic', Kilmainham Tales are all works of high scholarly standards. Indeed, they arguably set new standards for the quality of their research and the manner in which they present their subjects. Every book is comprehensively indexed, for example, something larger, more 'academic' publishing houses could well emulate. Each work is thoroughly proof-read, keeping errors to a minimum, and any errors of fact or otherwise can be quickly corrected. In addition, each book is copiously illustrated with contemporary pictures and/or specially commissioned illustrations.

This website is intended to be an online window for our books, but it is hoped it will grow to be more than that. We will carry news items relating to Kilmainham Gaol, the surrounding area and other areas that are of interest to the Gaol and its history. Here you will find information on all our authors and their activities, for instance, as well as reviews of books by other writers and publishers.
Co-operation with other publishers:
Kilmainham Tales Teo. is not in competition with any other publisher, large or small. We wish to work in harmony with all and will gladly review fairly any relevant book we are given for review. The Irish history scene - especially the early 20th Century - is particularly blessed with many excellent publishers and historians, and we read and consult most of their books. If you are a self-publisher or small publisher like ourselves don't be afraid to contact us with a view to exchanging ideas or whatever.
If our readers have comments or suggestions for new Kilmainham Tales, then we would be delighted to carry a selection of those too. Just e-mail us here.
Of course, a site such as this will contain many opinions. While these are welcome, they must always be understood to be the opinion of the writer, and not of the site or Kilmainham Tales Teo. We welcome discussion, and will not stifle it, but if you write it, you are responsible for it and must be prepared to accept the consequences of publication!
Kilmainham Tales Teo. is a ‘not for profit’ company, i.e. its primary purpose is not to make a profit but to publish. This means that books on subjects which may reasonably be expected to have a limited market will be included on the Company’s list, as well as ones which, it is hoped, will reach a wider audience.
Many of the authors of these Kilmainham Tales are or were guides in the Gaol itself. It is our belief that the Guides/Information Officers there are unique – their interest in their subject goes, for some, beyond that of a mere job - they are interested in aspects of the Gaol’s history and it is hoped that publication in the Kilmainham Tales series will act as a stimulus to them and others to continue to research this incredible national monument's history.
A glance at our Authors page, or the sub-page Authors' Activities will give you a better idea of the quality of author we have. You will see that several authors are not exclusive to Kilmainham Tales Teo. but also write for major publishers - Four Courts, Mercier, Merrion, New Island etc. etc. - so we are indeed proud to have them also write for us.
